Female counterparts to comic superheroes became a trend in the comics industry for the past year. Like Superman with Supergirl, Batman had his female counterpart in the form of Bat Girl. Barbara Gordon was identified as the first bat Girl, though she only succeeded Betty Kane who was introduced in 1961. Barbara was depicted as the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. Her civilian identity is given a doctorate in library science and was employed as head of Gotham City Public Library, as well as later being elected to the United States Congress. She operates primarily Gotham City, allying herself with Batman and other prominent heroes in the DC Universe
